Big is proving to be a big part of being better in the avocado business – just ask Fleming’s Nurseries in far north Queensland, which was recently awarded the NGIQ Best New Product for its JALA giant avocado at the Green Expo held on the Gold Coast.

This mega avocado is not only big, it is beautiful too, featuring lovely creamy fruit which stays green and fresh longer than most other avocados.

The velvety-soft fruit is considered ideal for all avocado recipes and is even better as just one avocado stands in fortwo, making more quac’ (sic) for your buck.

FNQ nursery manager, Jessica Fleming, says she is extremely proud but also excited to see this avocado released to the Australian market as it’s sure to be a winner.

“Aussie’s love our avos and the bigger the better, so JALA is going to blow everyone’s mind,” Jess said.

“We have been so impressed through our trials, particularly with the fruit’s consistency of quality, the size and also the beautiful nutty flavour which is rich and creamy but not overpowering.

“We were thrilled to win the best new product award at the 2024 Green Expo because it just reinforced what we already knew, JALA is not only big – it’s going to be huge for Australia.”

Jess says the avocado was bred by Lorna Spackman, from a seedling avocado tree which had nice eating flesh and a very large seed.

They used this tree as their parent and grew more seedlings.

“Lorna liked the fruit from one of these and gave some to her neighbour John (Jack) Morgan.

“Jack thought the fruit was special and together, Lorna and Jack grafted more trees to test it further.

“These initial trees are now about 10 years old and cropping well.”

Which also explains the name JALA it comes from JA ck and L orn A.

Under Jack and Lorna’s PBR’d conditions, Fleming’s Nurseries grafted additional trees for the comparative growing trial about five years ago and these trees are now fruiting very well.

FNQ is Australia’s leading grower of Avocado stock for the orchard industry and is delighted to see growers are keen to jump in and start growing these beauties, which means it won’t be long before JALA can be found on supermarket and fruit store shelves across the nation.
