Mango intensification – small trees – big results

June 21, 2019 | 5 Min read
Tree crop orchard intensification has been successfully adopted around the world in many temperate crops, with benefits of earlier yields and higher yields, improved fruit quality, smaller trees and increased efficiency of management. The small tree/high productivity initiative, has begun to study the benefits and issues associated with intensifying a tropical mango orchard.

Intensification of temperate species has improved Australian apple yields from 10 to 100 T/ha over a 30-year period.

Smaller trees have allowed increased efficiency of management (pruning, harvesting), and efficacy of spray applications; better utilisation of resources (land, fuel, water, labor and solar energy).

When combined, an integrated orchard system, financial break-even point is earlier in the crop cycle and with higher profitability.
